Gulf Coast: The White Sailboat — Bonaventure

Ash Scattering on the Gulf Coast · Under Full Sail · Personally Conducted · Beautifully Documented

Everything you need to know about this ceremony: the water, the seasons, and what your family will receive.

When We Operate: We conduct Gulf Coast ceremonies May through October, the six months when the Gulf is warmest and most alive. Late spring brings the first of the season's sea turtle nests appearing on the white sand, and the water beginning to warm toward emerald. Summer delivers the deepest color, the longest days on the water, and the dolphin pods at their most active. Autumn brings calmer seas and the golden afternoon light that makes the horizon feel infinite. The ceremony takes place aboard a sailboat in Pensacola's Gulf waters, within sight of the white sand shoreline.

A farewell under full sail.

"The moment the boat clears the harbor and the shoreline falls away, and there is nothing in any direction but open water and sky and the sound of something vast and patient. That is where this ceremony lives." — The Bonaventure Team

May–Oct
Ceremony season

"The Gulf faces west. In the final hour before sunset, the water turns copper and the sky fills with color. When the sail comes down in that light, the entire horizon becomes the ceremony."

The Gulf Coast waters off the Florida panhandle are among the most beautiful in the world. The water here holds a warmth and a color that photographs never quite get right. Flat water, golden light, warm air, and almost no one else out on it.

The Gulf Coast waters off the Florida panhandle are among the most beautiful in the world. The sand is pure white quartz, ground impossibly fine, cool underfoot even in summer. The water runs from turquoise to emerald to deep indigo, depending on the light and the hour. On calm days the sea floor is visible at depth. And the bottlenose dolphins that live in these waters year-round have a well-documented habit of approaching boats. They surface alongside the hull in pairs, unhurried. The photographs we bring back of those encounters often become the image a family holds onto longest.

The ceremony takes place aboard a sailboat in Pensacola's Gulf waters, within sight of the white sand shoreline. Anna and James Strasburg lead every Gulf Coast ceremony personally. They know this coast. They know where the dolphins gather, where the afternoon light turns most gold, where the water falls quiet. The Gulf faces west. In the final hour before sunset over open water, the entire sky becomes the ceremony.

For a loved one who felt most alive near the ocean, who walked these beaches, fished these waters, watched these sunsets, or simply needed the sound of waves to feel right with the world, there is no more fitting farewell than this one. Your family designates Bonaventure as your personal representative. We carry out every detail, from the sailing to the federal documentation filed on your behalf. We return to your family the photographs, the coordinates, and the written tribute of the ceremony. You carry nothing but the memory.

For one family, for one person, with full reverence, every time.

Did they love the ocean?

When We Operate

Six Months. The Gulf at Its Fullest.

We schedule Gulf Coast ceremonies May through October, the six months when the water is warmest, the dolphins most active, and the sea turtles return to nest on the white sand beaches. Your loved one deserves the coast at its most beautiful, and we plan accordingly.

The Windows We Work Within

Late spring carries the warming Gulf and the season's first loggerhead and green sea turtles returning to the white sand beaches to nest. Summer delivers the deepest emerald water, long days on open sail, and the dolphin pods at their most active. Summer evenings bring fireworks rising over the beaches. Autumn brings calmer seas and the golden afternoon light that turns the Gulf copper before dusk, with the last of the season's turtle nests hatching under the September moon. These are the six months we operate, and the Gulf is at its most beautiful in every one.

How a Gulf Coast Ceremony Works

Four Steps. We Handle Everything.

We designed this service so families carry nothing but the memory. We carry everything else.

1
Tell us their story.
What did the ocean mean to them? Fishing, sailing, sunsets watched from the shore, the sound of waves? Tell us whatever you know, and we will find the timing and the setting that honors them best.
2
We plan the ceremony.
Our Gulf Coast team coordinates the sailboat, captain, and sailing route. We monitor weather and sea conditions to find the window of light and calm that fits your loved one's story. Everything is in our hands from this point forward.
3
We handle every detail.
Your family designates Bonaventure as your personal representative. We manage all documentation and logistics. The ceremony is conducted by our team with full reverence: a reading, a moment of stillness, and the gentle release of your loved one's ashes into the Gulf.
4
We bring the ceremony home to you.
Professional photographs of the water and the light. GPS coordinates of the exact scattering point. A written tribute of the ceremony. Native memorial trees planted through the USDA Forest Service Plant-A-Tree Program. Everything documented and returned to your family.
Ready to begin? We will guide you through everything.

Most families tell us the hardest part was deciding this was what they wanted. Once that decision is made, we take care of everything else.

Questions Families Ask

Ash Scattering on the Gulf Coast. Your Questions Answered.

Honest answers to every question, including the ones people are sometimes afraid to ask.

  • Yes. Florida places no state-level restrictions on the scattering of cremated remains. Your family is the legally authorized party to determine the final disposition of your loved one's cremated remains. Bonaventure acts as your designated personal representative and handles every authorization and piece of documentation required for the ceremony on your family's behalf.
  • Aboard a sailboat in Pensacola's Gulf waters, within sight of the white sand shoreline. These are some of the most beautiful coastal waters in the world: emerald, clear, and on calm days so still that the sea floor is visible at depth. We select the specific setting based on your loved one's story and the weather window that fits best.
  • No. Bonaventure specializes in unaccompanied scattering. Our team conducts the full ceremony on your behalf as your designated personal representative. You receive photographs, GPS coordinates of the scattering point, and a written tribute that bring the experience home to you. This is exactly what we were built for.
  • May through October, the six months when the Gulf is at its most beautiful. This is the window when the water runs warmest and clearest, the bottlenose dolphins are at their most active, and loggerhead and green sea turtles return to the white sand beaches to nest. We schedule within this window because we believe your loved one deserves the coast at its fullest.
  • Every month within our window holds something extraordinary. Late spring brings the warming Gulf and the first of the season's sea turtle nests appearing on the beaches. Summer delivers the deepest emerald water, the longest days, and the dolphin pods at their most active. Summer evenings bring fireworks rising over the beaches. Early autumn brings calmer seas and the golden afternoon light that turns the Gulf copper before dusk. We will guide you toward the timing that fits your loved one best.
  • Frequently, yes. Bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents of these Gulf waters and commonly approach vessels. We cannot guarantee an appearance. The sea makes no promises. But our captains know when and where dolphins are most active, and the photographs we capture of those encounters often become the image families treasure most from the entire ceremony.
  • Bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents and appear in a high percentage of Gulf Coast ceremonies. Loggerhead and green sea turtles surface throughout the May-to-October window. Florida manatees drift through during the warmer months. Pelicans, ospreys, and bald eagles work the shoreline. Stingrays and baitfish schools move through the shallows. We cannot guarantee a specific animal in the frame of a photograph, but we can guarantee the Gulf itself, and we watch for them all.
  • USPS is the only federally authorized carrier for cremated remains within the United States. You can request a free USPS Cremains Kit from your local post office. Place the ashes in a sealed, durable container and ship to us, or have your funeral home ship directly. Ashes are logged with a unique identifying code the moment they arrive.
  • Professional ceremony photographs of the sailboat, the water, and the moment. GPS coordinates of the exact scattering point in the Gulf. A written storytelling tribute of the ceremony. Confirmation of native memorial trees planted in your loved one's name through the USDA Forest Service Plant-A-Tree Program in Conecuh National Forest. Everything documented and returned to your family.
  • Yes, in two ways. Pensacola's public beaches allow you to stand on the same white sand and look out toward the horizon where your loved one rests. For families who want to visit the exact coordinates, private sailing and fishing charters operate year-round out of Pensacola and can take you back to the scattering point. Some families make this an annual visit. The Gulf holds them. That is the whole point.
  • Yes, and we encourage it. We will read anything your family chooses: a poem, a scripture, a personal letter, a favorite passage. Include it with your shipment or email it to us in advance. The ceremony is shaped around your loved one, not around our routine.
  • Our Gulf Coast team is led by Anna and James Strasburg, who conduct every ceremony personally. They have spent years sailing these waters and know them intimately. Our broader team includes former park rangers, wilderness guides, credentialed soil scientists and fisheries biologists, and an 18-year editorial professional. We know this Gulf from years on it, not from photographs. Every ceremony is conducted with reverence, documented professionally, and returned to your family in full. This is not a logistics company. This is our life's work.
