Great Smoky Mountains v3 — Bonaventure

Ash Scattering in Great Smoky Mountains National Park · Personally Conducted · Beautifully Documented

Everything you need to know about this ceremony: the forest, the seasons, and what your family will receive.

When We Operate: We conduct ceremonies in Great Smoky Mountains during the six most spectacular months of the year. Peak wildflower season in spring, when this park earns its title as the wildflower capital of North America. The synchronous firefly phenomenon in early June, one of the rarest natural events on earth. And the extraordinary fall foliage season, when the ridgelines run gold and crimson for miles in every direction. We schedule within these windows because we believe the setting should be as extraordinary as the person being honored.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park · Tennessee & North Carolina

Fireflies at dusk. Wildflowers as far as you can see. The forest that America never stopped coming back to.

"What we love: Standing at Newfound Gap at first light, the ancient ridgelines rolling to the horizon in every direction and the mist still filling the valleys below. This is America's most visited national park, and it earns that every single time." — The Bonaventure Team

"In early June, as dusk settles into the hollows, the forest begins to light up. Thousands of synchronous fireflies rising together, flashing in perfect unison, filling the trees with a rhythm that stops you cold and reminds you that some things in this world are still genuinely wild."

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States, and the reason is simple: there is nowhere else like it. The mountains here are ancient. The Appalachians are among the oldest ranges on earth, and these peaks hold the last great expanse of temperate old-growth forest in the eastern United States. Some of these trees have been standing for centuries. The forest floor blooms in extraordinary abundance every spring, a richness that has earned the Smokies the title of wildflower capital of North America.

The park straddles Tennessee and North Carolina. Clingmans Dome rises into a world of cloud forest and Fraser firs draped in mist, where the view on a clear morning stretches beyond anything you can fully take in. The valleys below come alive every spring in waves of color, trilliums and wild azaleas and lady's slippers spreading across the hillsides in a bloom that draws people from every corner of the country.

Then the fireflies come. In early June, the Smokies host one of the rarest natural phenomena in the world: synchronous fireflies that pulse together in choreographed bursts of light. Thousands of them rising from the forest floor at dusk, lighting the trees in rhythms that feel almost impossible. It is a phenomenon found in only a handful of places on earth, and the Smokies are the most accessible of all of them.

By October, the foliage takes over. The ridgelines catch fire, running gold and crimson and amber for miles in every direction. Elk move through Cataloochee Valley in herds that feel genuinely wild. The air carries the smell of fallen leaves and cold mornings, and the light comes low through the trees and makes everything glow.

A Smoky Mountains ash scattering ceremony through Bonaventure carries your loved one into this living forest during its most extraordinary seasons. The wildflower hillsides they talked about for years. The firefly hollow they always meant to see. The ridge that turns gold every fall and takes your breath away every time.

For one family, for one person, with full reverence, every time.

When We Operate

Six Months. Three Extraordinary Seasons.

We schedule Smoky Mountains ceremonies during the most spectacular windows this park has to offer. Your loved one deserves the setting at its fullest, and we plan accordingly.

The Windows We Work Within

Spring brings wildflower season across the hillsides, wave after wave of color from late March through May, earning the Smokies their title as the wildflower capital of North America. Early June brings the synchronous fireflies: thousands of them rising from the forest floor at dusk, lighting the trees in unison in one of the rarest natural events on earth. And fall delivers some of the finest foliage color on the continent, the ancient ridgelines going gold and crimson while the elk move through the valley below. These are the six months we operate, and we choose them with intention.
